National Blood Transfusion Center
The primary focus of Global Healing's work in Moldova is centered in the capital, Chisinau. Following work to increase blood safety and harmonization with European Union standards, Global Healing is assisting the National Blood Transfusion Center (NBTC) in educating physicians and establishing stronger quality systems. Global Healing hosted its third Transfusion Medicine Symposium in June 2009 in order to provide modern, evidence-based education to Moldovan physicians involved with the national blood service. Global Healing is working with the NBTC to establish a reference laboratory to perform antibody identification and begin phenotyping their donor base.
Oncology Institute
The Oncology Institute is the second largest user of blood products and treats all cancer patients in Moldova, most of whom are in the late stages of cancer. While the Republic of Moldova has made great strides to modernize its national blood system, the Oncology Institute lacked a centralized, modern facility to deliver blood components to its patients. Since our cooperation with the staff at the Oncology Institute, Global Healing has modernized storage and testing equipment; compatibility testing; hematology and coagulation analysis; patient identification; and quality management processes. Establishing an appropriate and responsible clinical laboratory and transfusion service at this institution is critical, as the Ministry of Health of Moldova plans to replicate the model here at other major hospitals in Moldova.
Cahul Regional Blood Transfusion Center
Extending access to safe, reliable blood components beyond the capital is critical to ensure survival of a variety of patients. Global Healing is working in direct partnership with the National Blood Tranfusion Center (NBTC) and Moldovan Ministry of Health to establish the Cahul Regional Blood Transfusion Center (RBTC). Global Healing is providing equipment and serving as consultants, while the NBTC shares modern blood banking standards of operation in a "train-the-trainers" approach. Former trainees of Global healing will train their colleagues to establish a blood bank that matches international standards, thus establishing a legacy of sustainability.
Biomedical Engineering Education
Maintaining equipment regularly is crucial to continued success. As with all our programs, Global Healing ensures that the local team is fully capable of maintaining and servicing the biomedical equipment they receive. This extends the life of the equipment and enables the smooth functioning of the blood bank after Global Healing’s active involvement. Our Chief Technical Consultant is spearheading a custom educational program for the local engineers.
